Liverpool have been linked with a plethora of strikers as their quest to replenish lost goals continues.
Joe Knappett picks three that the Reds have been linked with, and assesses their suitability.
Now, I don’t think anybody, not just Liverpool fans, would argue with the claim that we have had a great transfer window so far. Easily better than any of our Premier League rivals and the fact that we aren’t even two weeks into the window says to me that things can only get better. But, one thing that any Liverpool fan will tell you is that there is one signing we need to make, a top class striker.
After the huge disappointment of the 2014-15 season and the resulting lack of goals, it is clear to everyone that we need to bring in a top class, 20-goals-a-season striker to get us somewhere near the level we were at during the 2013-14 season. We have striking options already but half of them will most likely be leaving the club and the other half aren’t at the standard that we need right now. The one exception to this is Daniel Sturridge although he is unlikely to be fit until September which is far from ideal.
All of this points to us needing to bring in a new hitman. Let’s take a look at three possible striking options for the Reds and assess whether they could be successful at Anfield.
First up is the man that we have been consistently linked with, Christian Benteke. The Guardian believes that we will sign the Aston Villa striker for £32.5m by the end of this week. I don’t think that Benteke would be a good signing for us and for me this is due mainly to his huge price tag. In my opinion, his price is far too high for a striker who only managed 13 goals last season with 11 of those coming in the final three months of the campaign.
As well as this, I don’t think that Benteke would suit our style of play. He is primarily suited to scoring headers from crosses and set-pieces whereas we like to play quick, passing football mainly on the ground. He is, however, a good finisher and with Coutinho and Firmino providing chances he’s likely to bag a few goals at least. Also, he is only 24 which means that if we were to buy him we could be with us for many years. Overall though, I don’t think that Benteke would be the right signing for us at this time.
Second up is Lyon striker Alexandre Lacazette who we have been linked with throughout the summer. The Frenchman scored an amazing 27 goals in 33 Ligue 1 appearances, getting six assists as well and, at the age of 24, it is hardly surprising that we are interested in signing him. According to French media outlet Le10 Sport, Liverpool are willing to meet Lyon’s asking price of €30m (£21m) which makes the Lyon man a much cheaper alternative to Benteke.
Lacazette as well has incredible pace and finishing ability so, couple that with the chances that will be provided by our Brazilian magicians and we’re on to a potential winner. I think the Frenchman would be the ideal signing for us. He is without a doubt the world class striker that we need and his signing would send a message to other clubs, not only in the Premier League but around the world that we mean business.
Third and final option is Stevan Jovetic. The Manchester City outcast is someone that we have previously been linked to with Telegraph Sport claiming that Rodgers could be lining up a £16m bid for the striker. Jovetic is now the fourth choice at City and, after being cut from the Champions League squad to make way for Wilfried Bony, will almost certainly be looking to move on from the Etihad. The 25-year-old is a good dribbler and good finisher as well (I remember him scoring a decent brace against us last season) and the fact that he is only 25 and would cost less than Benteke makes him a good option in my eyes. The City striker scored five goals in nine Premier League appearances last season, getting three assists as well. That’s a pretty good return from a fourth choice striker if you ask me.
As well as this, if we were to sign him I’m positive that he will want to prove himself in the Premier League. He’ll have the bit between his teeth and will want to make his old employers regret letting him go (reminds me of a certain out-of-favour English striker we bought from Chelsea). Ultimately I feel that it would be good business if we were to sign Jovetic, I think he is a quality striker and could push us back to where we need to be, in the Champions League.
My first choice of the three, and, I’m sure, every other Liverpool fan’s first choice as well, is Lacazette. I feel that if we can sign him it will give us a squad capable of getting back into the Champions League, a squad that (who knows?) could possibly challenge for the title again.
